From turned newel posts and balusters to handrails and matching stair components, Classic Woodturning has been making timber stair parts for Melbourne homes since 1984. Working out of our Bayswater workshop in the eastern suburbs, we turn staircase components to suit Victorian, Federation and period interiors across Victoria, as well as clean contemporary profiles for new builds. Every baluster and newel is turned to order, so heights, diameters and patterns are matched precisely to your staircase rather than forced to fit an off-the-shelf range.
Ordering is easiest when you can give us a few key measurements: the length and diameter of the baluster, the finished height and square sizes of the newel, and the number of pieces in the run. A sample or a dimensioned photo lets us match the turned pattern exactly. We work in a wide range of hardwoods and softwoods to suit staining, a natural finish or heritage matching, and can supply parts sanded ready for finishing on site.
Renovators often come to us with a single broken baluster or a worn newel that needs to blend seamlessly into an original run, and this is where our matching service earns its keep. From a Victorian terrace staircase in Carlton to a Federation home in the eastern suburbs or a homestead in country Victoria, we replicate the profile and timber so old and new sit together invisibly.
We also manufacture full sets of timber stair parts for complete rebuilds, in the species and finish you specify. As part of the Karem Woodcraft group we handle both small repairs and larger staircase commissions.
Balusters are typically fixed between the string and handrail while newels anchor the run, and we can advise on lengths and tenons for your build. We deliver Australia-wide from Melbourne. Call 03 9720 7266 to discuss your staircase, timber and quantities.
